Committed to Improve water quantity and quality to protect Freshwater Biodiversity
The WWF Tanzania ABInBev/TBL project is dedicated to safeguarding water quality and quantity in Dar es Salaam through Bankable Nature-based Solutions (BNbS) and collaborative initiatives. This initiative supports the United Republic of Tanzania (URT) in implementing Integrated Water Resources Management and Development Plans (IWRMDPs), particularly focusing on catchment conservation. By prioritizing the Msimbazi River—home to Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL)—the project aligns with WWF’s strategic objectives to conserve a diverse range of biodiversity, while also addressing the broader catchment management issues, including the Lower Ruvu and Coastal Catchments, with a particular emphasis on the Ruvu, Msimbazi, and Kizinga rivers.
These rivers are critical to Dar es Salaam's water supply but face significant challenges related to both water quality and quantity. Urban issues, such as inadequate waste management, pollution, sand mining just to mention a few heavily impact water quality in the Msimbazi River. Meanwhile, the Ruvu River is essential for addressing quantity challenges, as it is the primary source of water for Dar es Salaam city and satellite towns. By extending efforts beyond the Msimbazi River, the project aims to tackle the root causes of these pressing water supply issues, ensuring a more sustainable future for both the city's people and its ecosystems.
